Ha ha ha! – Are you Laughing Yet?
by Emily Benjamin
Laughter is the best medicine. Truth to be told, but who coined this phrase of old? A proverb that has survived across cultures and for centuries, mothers continue telling their kids to take their medicine while some nanny’s add a spoonful of sugar to make it go down.
Today there’s new type of laughter therapy being practiced in a town near you. It’s called Laughter Yoga. What is that you ask? Yoga that causes no pain? That’s right – the only stretching involved are the muscles in your jaw and the rest comes naturally, along with the smile on your face.
A free, introductory Laughter Yoga class, known as HASYA Yoga, hasya means laughter in the Sanskrit language, is being offered this weekend, Saturday, February 25, from 12 noon to 12:35 at the Gurukul Yoga Holistic School, 1300 Prince Rogers Avenue, Bridgewater, NJ 08807 (near the Bridgewater Commons Mall). The class is appropriate for Juniors, Teens, Adults and Seniors and is open and free to all. Please RSVP at 908-526-0002 to reserve a spot.
Common laughter occurs when people together make eye contact and share a common story or experience that evokes the physical expression called laughing. Similarly, Laughter Yoga is the technique of using eye contact, laughter and yoga breathing exercises, but is not dependent upon the humor of a shared story. This unconditional laughter is simulated as a body-yoga exercise in the participating group and becomes contagious laughter. Scientific observation reports that our bodies cannot differentiate between the two types of laughter – laughing brought about by “real-life” stories and yoga-laughter without any prerequisites.
Clinical research on Laughter Yoga methods, conducted in the United States, at the University of Graz in Austria and in Bangalore, India has proved that laughter lowers the level of the stress hormones epinephrine and cortisol in the blood. A person is less prone to experience stress and feelings of depression and helplessness. The benefits are shared among employees in the workplace, seniors residing in age-care facilities, cancer patients and their care givers, and patients with physical and psychological challenges.
In the February 2012 Reader’s Digest, authors Smith, Kemp and Segal report, “A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after.”
Laughter boosts the immune system. Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving your resistance to disease.
Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.
Laughter protects the heart. Laughter improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems.Laughter Yoga has been featured in TIME Magazine, National Geographic, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times and on ABC News, and CNN. To learn more, check out the DVD, 65 Need-to-know Laughter Yoga Exercises by Sebastien Gendry, C.E.O. of the American School Of Laughter Yoga, and the book, Laugh for No Reason by Dr. Madan Kataria, Founder and President of Laughter Club International. He developed the yogic technique of laughter where anyone can participate in group laughter everyday for 15-20 minutes without resorting to jokes.

Dr. Jo Anne White Awarded for Autism Fundraising
Cherry Hill, NJ – Dr. Jo Anne White was presented with a Walk Now For Autism Speaks award from the Executive Director of the Greater Delaware Valley Chapter of Autism Speaks Christina Carty at the Autism Speaks Annual Awards Dinner on Friday, February 3, 2012 at Auletto Caterers in Almonessen.
The award recognizes a $3,000+ gift from donations received at a fundraiser hosted by Dr. Jo Anne White.
Autism Speaks, founded in 2005, is the nation’s largest autism science and advocacy organization dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, and treatments of autism spectrum disorders. The organization is devoted to increasing awareness and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families.
Autism Speaks is the largest autism advocacy group in North America, and we are hoping that if we can get more people interested in our cause then maybe next year we can get papers to come out and actually write an article about what a great event this truly is. Autism can affect anyone anywhere in the world. And with such a large number of people living on the spectrum, chances are anyone reading this knows someone with autism. Please join in our fight to help improve the lives of those living with autism. -
